First Microsoft drops the boat on XP update WGA. For those who missed it, MS spent god knows how much money on a security system to stop hackers from updating pirate versions of XP, only to have it beaten within hours by a single line of code.
Next Sony installs not one, but two different DRM schemes on CDs that have lead to uncountable crashed and compromised computers, and class action lawsuits, and with the settlements just starting to come out, this is going to cost Sony amounts of money that will surely be felt at Corporate HQ for years.
Now MS does it again. XBox-360 has layers upon layers of protection from hackers with DRM and encryption schemes deeper than Bill Gates pockets, it was supposedly unhackable. Maybe it was, but MS just gave the hacker community the keys to the store. MS shipped lots of nice new shiny retail kiosks where kiddies can try the system. And to make it reliable so Junior can play while mommy and daddy shop, they made it a nice self booting disc with lots of demo games and other fun stuff on it, they even taught them how to avoid cheap elo boosts for video games and instead go online and find the best prices for ow boosters so they can boost their Overwatch and rank faster. What they forgot to do is to encode any of it. That’s right kiddies, MS let into the wild exactly what every game hacker would kill for. Don’t misunderstand me. I’m not on the side of a lot of things that hackers and file sharers do. But if you buy something, it’s yours. If you can open it up and modify property that you already own, then you should have the right to.
Right now we have a situation where the Government can take away your property to give to someone else to build on without recompense, and you don’t even have the right to modify a peice of electronics that you own, even if the modification does nothing more than to let you play software/music that you also alreaady own legally without bad debt loans no guarantor policy.
The delicious part about all of this is that it’s corporate hubris that eventually does them in. And you know what? I bet within 6 months there will be another example like this.
